Hello!!! Today I wanted to discuss Hair OILS. I made a post on FB earlier this week, asking people what their favorite HAIR OIL was. I had 6 different oils to look closer at. The reason I had asked, I wanted to look at these oils closer, determine their main oil ingredients and compare how these pure, essential oils – could benefit different types of hair.
Once I started looking at these OILs – I was literally shocked. Not a single one of these oils, had their main ingredient, as an essential – botanical – natural oil. All 6 of these oils contained SILICONE! Yes, silicone is essentially an oil – but it is a MAN MADE oil – definitely not NATRUAL, ESSENTIAL, BOTANICAL……. So I started looking at others oils – and every single oil I researched, started their ingredient list with a SILICONE. I looked at “salon brands” and “department store brands” – it didn't matter – they all contained the SAME FIRST TWO INGREDIENTS!!!
I was able to locate one other oil – that was a PURE oil, besides the Rejuvenique Oil (that I personally use) and I will discuss those oils, as well as the other oils I researched, in detail.
First on the chopping block………
According to the website, “Get the silky, shiny and healthy hair you've always wanted. Moroccanoil Treatment is the product that pioneered oil-infused hair care and created the worldwide buzz on argan oil. The original foundation for hairstyling, Moroccanoil Treatment can be used as a conditioning, styling and finishing tool. Infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil and shine—boosting vitamins, this completely transformative hair treatment detangles, speeds up drying time and boosts shine—leaving you with nourished, manageable and smooth hair with each use. Outshine the rest.”
So, one would assume that Argan is the MAIN ingredient in this oil, right??
You actually, couldn't be MORE WRONG!!!
So – let's find their ingredients…….that ARE NOT located on their website btw – I found this info on ingredient list at Livestrong.com
The ingredient list for the commercial product Moroccan Oil are listed in declining volume order on the label: cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone, cyclomethicone, butylphenyl methylpropional, argania spinoza kernel oil, linseed extract, fragrance supplement, D&C Yellow-11, D&C Red-17, coumarin, benzyl benzoate and alpha-isomethyl ionone
See argania spinoza kernel oil – that is Argan Oil – look at the position of it on that list……
According to their website “Oil infused hair care provides many benefits to all types of hair. Exquisite Oil Strengthening Treatment is formulated with Polynesian Tamanu Oil for a ultra lightweight, scented oil that strengthens thin, fragile hair. Strengthens hair by boosting resistance to breakage; Replenishes hair with moisture and conditioning; Adds exquisite shine.”
This ingredient list was VERY HARD TO FIND!!
But finally got it from HERE
Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Alcohol Denat, Parfum/Fragrance, Tocopherol Acetate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Alcohol, 2-Oleamido-1, 3-Octadecanediol, Citronellol, Linalool (FIL D55500/3)
According to their website “For anti-frizz and extra shine, particularly for dry or coarse hair. OI Oil adds shine and softness to hair while also detangling and fighting frizz.”
Ingredients: CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, DISILOXANE, Dimethiconol, CYCLOHEXASILOXANE, ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNATE, PARFUM \ FRAGRANCE, TOCOPHEROL, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL / HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, Bixa Orellana SEED EXTRACT, CITRONELLOL, Mauritia flexuosa FRU
This product, was actually the most shocking to me. Doterra is known for their essential oils, I even use their oils – not this particular HAIR OIL, but their essential oils. According to their website “doTERRA Salon Essentials Root to Tip Serum uses carefully chosen CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils to promote smooth, shiny hair and a healthy scalp, without weighing hair down.”
So – let's proceed and check out their ingredients…….Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Lavendula angustifolia (Lavender) Essential Oil, Mentha piperita (Peppermint) Essential Oil, Cedrus atlantica (Cedar Wood) Essential Oil, Lavandula hybrida (Lavandin) Essential Oil, Origanum majorana (Marjoram) Essential Oil, Argania spinosa Kernel Oil, Plukenetia volubilis Seed Oil, Limnanthes alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Melaleuca quinquenervia (Niaouli) Essential Oil, Rosmarinus officinalus (Rosemary) Essential Oil, Eucalyptus globulus (Eucalyptus) Essential Oil, Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Tocopherol, Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract
Starting to see a TREND YET??? I could continue – because I SEARCHED several more brands – I mainly have salon brands on here, because honestly – those are pricier and I expected better ingredients…..
Now – lets take a look at these ingredients listed first and second (or third, in 1 example)……
Is a lightweight SILICONE with a silky, slippery feel that also provides shine. It is WATER THIN so its great at dispersing thicker, greasier silicones – so it is commonly used with DIMETHICONE.
Is a Silicone based Polymer. “Polymer” means it's a larger molecule made up of several smaller units – bonded together. Simply put = it's a MAN MADE OIL!
Silicones give a FALSE ILLUSION of GREAT hair. You will get immediate hair smoothing, frizz fighting, shine enhancing results. But with repeated use these “oils” end up creating a barrier on top of hair, which blocks ANY type of moisture. This build up eventually repels moisture and nutrients – leaving your hair severely dehydrated and any type of conditioner, oil, treatment becomes ineffective. Build-up can also create a barrier on the scalp which suffocates and strangles the hair follicle – making your hair FALL OUT…….
Ok – as I said earlier, I was able to find 2 oils that were “pure” oils and SILICONE free. And – I'm not saying there isn't more than these 2, this is what I found by using the good ol'google search for 2 days.
Pure Argan Oil
The thing about this – it HAS TO SAY “PURE”. There are several different brands that are “pure” and it contains only Argan Oil. Argan Oil does have a larger molecular body and is unable to be absorbed into the cortex of the hair, but it does a nice job of smoothing hair, fighting frizz and enhancing shine.
I have been using this oil for over 9 months on myself and my family. This blend of oils are sourced from around the world, carefully vetting each supplier to ensure that what we put into our line meets the strictest standards of potency, purity and worker wellbeing.
A revolutionary and invigorating blend of 11+ unique molecular ingredients that mimic the body's natural oils.
Rejuvenique Oil Intensive is the foundation used in every one of the products I use. Its key ingredient is Abyssinian Oil, which creates a unique molecular-structured product that mimics the body’s own natural oils to visibly replenish and repair, with instant as well as long-term age prevention benefits, for both hair and skin:
* Seals, coats, and smoothes hair cuticles to boost shine and protect from environmental influences.
* Provides nutrients, Omega-6 fatty acids, and antioxidants which help prevent premature aging.
* Alleviates dehydration caused by harsh cleaners and styling products.
* Is a natural alternative to harmful silicones.
* Independent clinical studies show that its main ingredient Abyssinian Oil, generates superior results when compared to Argan Oil.
Ingredient list: Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Adansonia Digitata Oil, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Caryocar Brasiliense Fruit Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed
So – the entire point of all of this……… I was shocked to learn that the majority of hair oils, are mainly SILICONE BASED – not naturally based! No wonder I always had issues with my hair, when I used previous oils (and I tried a bunch of them).
